Residency

Welcome! The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health offers a four-year, ACGME-accredited postgraduate training program based at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics (UW Health). There are 28 residents in the program, seven per class. We are proud to train and educate our residents in a nationally-ranked Department at a world-class university medical center in one of the best places to work and live, alongside faculty who share in a mission to provide exceptional health care to our community.

 

Outstanding clinical training is the bedrock of our residency program. We boast exceptional surgical volume, high-volume obstetrics, and the full breadth of subspecialty clinics. All areas of our clinical and educational missions provide our residents with a robust and comprehensive training experience.

 

What makes us stand out? We are committed to training our residents to become physicians capable of providing highly skilled, evidence-based and compassionate care to all – and we think outside the box. Our residency program offers a Global Health Track, a Rural Residency Track, and a carefully structured and highly successful resident research curriculum. We are additionally proud to offer:

 

  • Diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism education, mission and programming
  • Focused activities dedicated to resident wellness and well-being 
  • A dedicated Ob-Gyn simulation lab stocked with video-assisted box trainers, a state-of-the-art ultrasound simulator, two birthing simulators, and an emergency Cesarean/C-Hysterectomy simulator
  • Weekly (and truly!) protected time for faculty-led, case-based didactics 
  • Opportunities for residents to meaningfully engage with leadership at all levels of our institution 
  • Clinical and surgical volume that far exceeds ACGME minimum requirements
  • A longitudinal, four-year (non-research) mentorship program that pairs residents with faculty members to help with professional challenges, life advice and career advising
  • A high match rate for residents who choose to pursue subspecialty fellowship
  • Research opportunities through the UW Collaborative for Reproductive Equity
  • Advocacy opportunities through Wisconsin ACOG as well as other specialty membership organizations

We are so proud of our program. And yet, these are challenging times. To be an Ob-Gyn in Wisconsin means acknowledging the forces that are beyond our individual control while doubling down on our collective commitment to ensure that our residents graduate with all the skills necessary to provide comprehensive reproductive health care. Following the Dobbs decision, which temporarily ended the provision of most abortion services across the state of Wisconsin, we partnered with an out-of-state program to ensure that our residents continued to receive exceptional, hands-on abortion care training. While we regret the need for this partnership, we are deeply grateful for what became an incredibly valuable and popular education experience for our residency. We are committed to upholding transparency about how the legal landscape has affected our residency training, and we welcome your questions.
